Peer Recovery Support Series, Section II: Hiring, Onboarding, and Integration

The Peer Recovery Support Series is provided as a collaborative effort between the Great Lakes ATTC and NAADAC.



The structure and process of bringing on Peer Recovery Support Specialist (PRSS) staff should be carefully considered before beginning the recruitment process. The role of the PRSS, as well as the flexibility and cooperation of existing staff, will impact the level of integration. To ensure a cohesive team, the entire organization, from administration to executive leadership, will need resources and training as well as implementation support around peer recovery support services and working within a recovery-oriented practice. Doing so will help current and new staff build upon the collaborative nature of the emerging profession, mitigate concerns from clinical staff, and clarify roles.

Learning Objectives
  • Outline recruitment and hiring practices (develop job description, essential skills, recruitment processes, compensation, etc.).
  • Demonstrate onboarding (orientation, job shadowing, determining workload, etc.).
  • Prepare for PRSS integration (build rapport, HIPAA and information sharing, EHR, etc.).

Dona M. Dmitrovic, MHS, is the Executive Director for Foundation for Recovery (FFR) in Las Vegas, NV. Leading this statewide recovery community organization, Dmitrovic’s expertise in organizational development and implementation of peer support has grown FFR into a valued resource in Nevada. Her experiences include National Director of Consumer Affairs at Optum, UnitedHealth, Chief Operating Officer of the RASE Project in central Pennsylvania, National Director of Education and Advocacy at the Johnson Institute in Washington, DC, and developing a support services program in central Pennsylvania for the Epilepsy Foundation. Dmitrovic holds a Master of Human Services degree from Lincoln University and is the former Chair of the Board of Faces & Voices of Recovery and former board member of Young People in Recovery.

Mirna Herrera, MA, MTBC, is the Associate Director of Peer Support Service at Truman Medical Center (TMC) in Kansas City, MO. Herrera is the recipient of the 2018 Mental Health Champion award for the work she has accomplished as the director of a peer operated service program at TMC. Her work focused on the mission to help clients with their recovery through peer support while sharing her own recovery story as a source of hope and motivation for her employees and peers. In her current role as Associate Director for Peer Support Services at TMC, she is working on developing a peer support program that reaches all areas of the hospital and expanding services into the community. She is a certified peer trainer for the Missouri credentialing board and a certified trauma-informed care trainer.

Tiffany Irvin, CPRS, is a Certified Peer Recovery Specialist and a mother of five in long term recovery. After regaining custody of her children and deciding a need for recovery in a new environment, she moved to the Twin Cities. Realizing how powerful sharing your story with others can be, Irvin became a Certified Peer Recovery Specialist. Since January 2019, Irvin has served as Manager of Peer Services at Minnesota Recovery Connection, supervising Peer Recovery Specialists in multiple programs. Irvin realized that using her story to give others hope was her purpose in life and she continues daily to encourage her peers and other participants in their recovery.

Who Should Attend

Addiction professionals, employee assistance professionals, social workers, mental health counselors, professional counselors, psychologists, and other helping professionals that are interested in learning about addiction-related matters. Live closed captioning is available and the captioning capabilities are in compliance with the practices defined in Worldwide Web Consortium’s (W3C) Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) and Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act.
