According to the Department of Labor, the United States will need up to 31% increase in addiction trained professionals. Currently, the addiction counselor workforce is facing a shortage due to an increase in awareness by the public of the addiction crisis, increase in awareness of the medical profession for more treatment options as more patients identify with their own addiction or that of a family member, and increase in access of alcohol and other drugs by younger ages. How do we recruit new professionals into this fast paced, high impact, lower paid profession? In this webinar, professionals will share what they are doing to change the rhetoric into action!
Cynthia Moreno Tuohy will give a brief overview of recruitment impact nationally; Christina Chasak will share the powerful work in action that the State of Nebraska is taking to turn the tide to recruit the new addiction professional workforce; Diane Sevening will advise us of how they recruited young members from the college program and mentored them into addiction practice and Sherri Layton will share how diverse this field of practice has become through the many new job opportunities available. Resources available to all participants including tool kits, fact sheets, student recruitment guides and much more!

Cynthia Moreno Tuohy, NCAC II, CDC III, SAP, is the Executive Director of NAADAC. She previously served as the Project Director of Central East Addiction Technology Transfer Center. Moreno Tuohy was the Program Director for Volunteers of America Western Washington, serving homeless populations and the co-occurrence of poverty and substance use disorder issues. She has been the administrator of multi-county, publicly-funded alcohol/drug prevention/intervention/treatment centers. She has been an international, national and state trainer for over 25 years in a variety of topics. She has also served as President of NAADAC and has worked as a curriculum writer. Her book, Rein in Your Brain: from Impulsivity to Thoughtful Living in Recovery, was released in May 2014 by Hazelden Publishers. Moreno Tuohy holds a bachelor’s degree in social work and advanced studies degrees in social work and public administration.
Diane Sevening, EdD, LAC, has 31 years of teaching experience and curently works an Assistant Professor at the University of South Dakota (USD) School of Health Sciences Addiction Studies (ADS) Department and a faculty advisor for the University of South Dakota's Coalition of Addiction Students and Professionals Pursuing Advocacy. Sevening serves as President of the SD Board of Addiction and Prevention Professionals (BAPP) and Treasurer of the International Coalition for Addiction Studies Education (INCASE). She spent 7 years as the Prevention and Treatment Coordinator for Student Health Services at USD, 1 year as a Family Therapist at St. Luke’s Addiction Center in Sioux City, IA, and 2 years as clinical supervisor for the USD Counseling Center. Sevening is currently the Regional Vice President for NAADAC North Central Region, Chair of the Student Committee for NAADAC, an evaluator for the National Addiction Studies Accreditation Commission (NASAC), and a member of the NASAC Board of Commissioners.
Sherri Layton, LCDC, CCS, began working in the addiction treatment field in 1977. She has worked for La Hacienda Treatment Center since 1992 and currently manages their outpatient, continuing care, and alumni services, coordinates La Hacienda's legislative involvement on the state and national level, contributes to accreditation and licensure compliance, and oversees staff training. Layton frequently speaks on topics related to addiction treatment, clinical supervision, advocacy, and leadership development. She served on the Advisory Committee for SAMHSA/NAADAC's Recovery to Practice Initiative, helping to develop a curriculum with nine webinars.
Christine Chasek, PhD, LIMHP, LADC, LPC, is an Assistant Professor at the University of Nebraska at Kearney in the Department of Counseling and School Psychology. Chasek has been practicing mental health and drug counseling for over 15 years as licensed professional. She has experience in behavioral health care administration working as an Assistant Director in a University counseling center and as Program Director is a large community mental health center. Chasek’s philosophy of treatment style is based on the individual’s strengths, resiliency, and a positive therapeutic and teaching relationship. Chasek’s research and teaching interests are in addiction counseling and training preparation, counselor education, and clinical outcomes in counseling.
