Description

Though adolescent cigarette smoking rates have decreased over the past four decades with fewer than 1 in 25 teens reporting daily tobacco use, e-cigarette use has increased two-fold. There are still lower rates of adolescent nicotine use overall, but a potentially dangerous trend has emerged with the increased use of vaping. Cigarette companies are not allowed to market their products to adolescents, but they have found other ways to create a new teen culture through the sponsorship of vaping “cloud” competitions. The purpose of this presentation is to explore the psychopharmacology of nicotine use, the culture of vaping, and strategies for prevention and treatment. Participants will learn how healthy factors of adolescent development add to the risk of becoming addicted to nicotine.

• Describe the basic psychopharmacological process of nicotine addiction.
• List at least three prevention and three treatment strategies of nicotine use (adolescent focus).
• Explain the initiation process into nicotine use (vaping and other technologies).

To earn a CE Certificate for viewing this webinar, you must view the webinar in its entirety, pass the CE quiz, and complete the online survey evaluation.

1. Upon completing the webinar, you will have access to the CE quiz within the course you are taking. Find the CE quiz in the NAADAC Education Center and click “purchase.” NAADAC members will be prompted to register for the CE quiz for free, while non-members will be prompted to pay a $20 processing fee to access the quiz.
2. A score of 80% or higher is required to pass the CE quiz and access your CE certificate. You have 10 opportunities to pass the quiz. If you are unable to pass the quiz in the allocated number of tries, then you must retake the course.
3. Upon passing the CE quiz, you will be required to complete the survey evaluation for the course. Once that is completed, your CE certificate will be immediately available in your account in the NAADAC Education Center to download and print. All certificates will be stored in the NAADAC Education Center under your profile name. Presenter

Beth Donnellan, M.Ed, ABD, CCTP, CATP, has worked in the fields of addiction and emergency mental health for over 25 years in varying positions. Donnellan began her career as a school counselor and licensed therapist working with teens. She has professional experience in many clinical areas as both a direct care provider and an administrator, including school counseling (K through 12), substance use/addictions treatment, mental health counseling, rape/crisis counseling, and traumatology. She has worked professionally as a certified prevention and addictions professional, before moving to the educational field as a Professor at both traditional and online universities. She has conducted community trainings, presented research at many national/international conferences, and has published research. Her research includes memory/attention as it is mediated by alcohol/drug use.
