This workshop will explore the use of various substances within the United States by American youth, and, more specifically, among African American youth and African American males as compared to the larger population of young people in the US. We will review the research data associated with use among each of these groups, including prevalence, age of onset, and short- and long-term effects. We will closely examine patterns of use over the last 10 years in adolescent African American males. Further, we will also examine the developing adolescent brain, the effects of substance use on brain development, and how the adolescent brain is negatively impacted by substance use. More specifically, we will discuss the mental and neurological long- and short-term effects of substance use on the adolescent brain. Outlining the effects on the adolescent brain, we will discuss the implications for mental health practitioners in working with youth. We will share interventions that can assist with remediating use and its effects. The webinar will conclude with an opportunity for participants to ask questions, share experiences, and discuss concerns.


Faye Barner, PhD, LPC, LSATP, CSOTP, currently serves as the Clinical Coordinator and Assistant Faculty at the South University-Richmond Campus- Clinical Mental Health Program. She is also the Executive Director of Clinical Education and Supervision for the National Association of Black Counselors. In addition to these interests and accomplishments, Barner has over 20 years of experience working in the community providing mental health and substance use disorder services. She is a licensed professional counselor, licensed professional substance use disorder treatment practitioner, and a certified sex offender treatment provider.

Melendez Byrd, PhD, has been an Associate Professor at Norfolk State University for 18 years, and he previously served eight years as the co-NCATE coordinator for the school of education. Byrd also previously served 10 years as the Department Chair for the Department of Secondary Education and School Leadership at Norfolk State University (NSU), where he oversaw graduate programs for students interested in pursuing their master’s degrees. In 2016, Byrd received the Distinguished Faculty Award for Teaching at NSU.

Learning Objectives
  • Participants will be able to identify the major sociological and psychological factors associated with increased risk of addiction.
  • Participants will be able to describe at least three therapeutic interventions to reduce substance use among African American adolescent males.
  • Participants will be able to characterize the social image of the adolescent African American male who has a substance use disorder.

  • Beginning level courses introduce learners to a content area; include information about a condition, treatment method, or issue; and involve learning and comprehending content.

  1. Upon completing the webinar, you will have access to the CE quiz within the course you are taking. Find the CE quiz in the NAADAC Education Center and click “purchase.” NAADAC members will be prompted to register for the CE quiz for free, while non-members will be prompted to pay a $20 processing fee to access the quiz.
  2. A score of 80% or higher is required to pass the CE quiz and access your CE certificate. You have 10 opportunities to pass the quiz. If you are unable to pass the quiz in the allocated number of tries, then you must retake the course.
  3. Upon passing the CE quiz, you will be required to complete the survey evaluation for the course. Once that is completed, your CE certificate will be immediately available in your account in the NAADAC Education Center to download and print. All certificates will be stored in the NAADAC Education Center under your profile name.
