In 1972, a group of addiction counselors founded the National Association of Alcoholism Counselors and Trainers (NAACT) to address the need for organized consituency to represent the interests of the addiction profession. That association eventually evolved into NAADAC, the Association for Addiction Professionals. 

Over the past 50 years, NAADAC has been proud to serve our members and represent the professional interests of more than 100,000 addiction counselors, educators and other addiction-focused health care professionals in the United States, Canada and abroad.

The National Certification Commission for Addiction Professionals (NCC AP) - The NCC AP, under the auspices of NAADAC, operates as an independent body for all matters involving the Association’s substance use disorders counselor certification and endorsement opportunities at the national and international level. Types of NCC AP Certifications - The NCC AP has instituted three foundational credentials for addiction counselors, three opportunities for specialization credentials, and one specialization endorsement.
