Clients are seeking mental health services that are not only available face-to-face, but also available via technology, using email, chat, VOIP, videoconferencing and even gaming platforms. Clinicians should understand how mental health services are delivered within the culture of cyberspace so that clients benefit from technology-assisted counseling and client confidentiality is maintained. This course will provide an overview of the core components to delivering services online that follow the best standard of care. A review of best practices will be offered that include such issues as proper informed consent, delivering services that are confidential and HIPAA compliant. Proper client screening will be reviewed within the context of cyberculture. Legal and ethical issues will be discussed including scope of practice, licensure, crossing state lines and maintaining a professional online presence.
