Description: This workshop explores some of the challenges that prevent many clinical supervisors from providing quality supervision and how the supervisor, as a role model, can effectively face these challenges to maximize the effectiveness of supervision. Included is a discussion on fostering an effective learning environment while forming collaborative alliances in a strength-based approach to supervision. The supervisor’s role in modeling and monitoring counselor ethics is also explored. Included in the webinar is an overview of the importance of direct observation along with the various means of gathering information about supervisees’ clinical work. Finally, formative and summative evaluations will be discussed along with three formative approaches known as feed up, feed forward and feedback. These approaches are presented as important components of eliciting career development plans from supervisees.

Learning Objectives:
  • The participants will explore the scope of clinical supervision including roles, definitions, and one’s own experience as a supervisee.
  • The participants will be able to define ethical and legal issues in clinical supervision including obligations, modeling and decision-making.
  • The participant will be able to explain the rationale and benefits of implementing direct observation as a supervisory method.
  • The participant will explore formative and summative feedback and their role in eliciting career development plans from supervisees.

Presenter:

Tom Durham, PhD, LADC, has been in involved in the field of addiction treatment since 1974 as a counselor, clinical supervisor, program director and educator. As Director of Training at NAADAC, he is responsible for the assessment, coordination, curriculum development and delivery of training to professionals in the field of addictions treatment. Tom also teaches graduate courses in psychology at Northcentral University. Tom previously worked in government contracting with SAMHSA and the Department of Defense. He has also served as a consultant and trainer for the Federal Bureau of Prisons’ addiction treatment programs. A seasoned curriculum developer and trainer, Tom has been conducting training for over 25 years on a variety of topics on the treatment of addictions including motivational interviewing, co-occurring disorders, and clinical supervision.
