This course discusses the four principles of Motivational Interviewing; motivating patients in treatment using the Stages of Change model; the four medications approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for treatment of alcohol dependence; matching patients to the most appropriate pharmacotherapy given their readiness to change; and specific interviewing methods and skills for alcohol dependent patients considering pharmacotherapy.

The course provides information about the use, side effects, and contraindications of acamprosate; information to discuss with clients; and a comparison of medications used to treat alcohol use disorders.

Life-Long Learning Series
New Horizons - Integrating Motivational Styles Strategies and Skills with Pharmacotherapy
This learning series will educate participants on motivational approaches to help alcohol dependent clients make positive behavior change in their lives. Seminars will discuss how addiction counselors and other helping professionals can utilize a motivational style in addiction treatment and integrate appropriate motivational strategies to help the alcohol dependent clients move through the Stages of Change.
New Innovations in Opioid Treatment: Buprenorphine
The goal of this learning series is to bring together addiction professionals to discuss medication-assisted treatment and to present unbiased information that can be used to assess the best possible treatment for patients. This educational program will discuss the four facets of opioid dependence and addiction (biological, psychological, social and spiritual), addiction as a disease and the scientific evidence to support this claim. This seminar will also address the three FDA-approved medications for opioid dependence, applying strategies to match patients to the most appropriate therapy, methods of motivating patients in opioid dependence treatment and building cooperative relationships between addiction professionals and prescribers.
