NAADAC, The Association for Addiction Professionals, congratulated the winners of its two most prestigious achievement awards, which were bestowed at the Association's second annual President's Dinner on October 7, 2004, at the Sunspree Resort in West Yellowstone, Montana. The event, which featured remarks by CRC Health Group CEO Barry Karlin, was held during NAADAC's Annual Membership Conference.

Jack Buehler (Nebraska) was named the Lora Roe Memorial Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselor of the Year. This award is presented to a counselor who has made an outstanding contribution to the profession of addiction counseling.

Buehler, with 24 years of clinical experience, has the distinction of being the first Nebraska Certified Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor. He serves as an advisory board member to the Prairielands Addiction Technology Transfer Center and as President of the Nebraska Association of Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors.

Philip Guinsburg (Tennessee) was named the Mel Schulstad Professional of the Year. This award recognizes an individual who has made outstanding and sustained contributions to the advancement of the addictions counseling profession.

For more than 30 years, Guinsburg has provided counseling services to individuals with substance use disorders. His involvement with NAADAC includes his tenure as the President of the middle Tennessee chapter. In addition, he has worked with the state Licensing Board on numerous issues to promote improvement in the counseling profession.

"In a profession replete with dedicated and highly skilled individuals, Jack Buehler and Philip Guinsburg have distinguished themselves as inspirations to both their colleagues and their clients," said NAADAC's Executive Director Pat Ford-Roegner, RN, MSW, FAAN. "NAADAC applauds their long history of accomplishments and salutes all the addiction professionals who are on the frontlines of the fight against addiction diseases."

Nomination and selection criteria for both awards are posted on NAADAC's web site (www.naadac.org).
