The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's Center for Substance Abuse Treatment has awarded NAADAC, The Association for Addiction Professionals, an educational grant for qualified counselors to attend NAADAC?s annual conference, Sept. 14-17, 2003, in Washington, D.C.

NAADAC is the largest professional membership organization for alcohol and drug abuse counselors and other addiction specialists. NAADAC is dedicated to enhancing the professional growth and development of individuals who treat and prevent addiction.

NAADAC will award a significant number of scholarships based on a number of qualifying factors. Scholarships will be equally divided between members who have been in the addiction profession less than five years and are in economic need and members who are emerging leaders in the profession and NAADAC.

Scholarships will cover the cost of registration and possibly travel and lodging costs depending upon the recipient's travel distance. NAADAC strongly encourages minority counselors to apply. NAADAC will be looking for applicants from diverse practice areas, such as faith-based, community settings, adolescent practice, homeless shelters, and opiate replacement therapy.

Applications are available by calling 1-800-548-0497 or on the NAADAC Web site.

The annual conference will feature presentations and workshops by the nation?s leading researchers and trainers on addiction treatment, including Thomas McLellan, David Powell, and Kenneth Minkoff. Training will also be offered for the Department of Transportation's Substance Abuse Professional (DOT/SAP) program and NAADAC's new Tobacco Addiction Specialist certification.
