NAADAC Partnerships Lead to Hawaii Conferences

NAADAC and four local partners are bringing an unprecedented educational session to Hawaii. The twin conferences, Balancing the Entanglement - Pain, Co-Occurring Disorders and Prescription Drugs, will bring a two-day conference program to Maui and Oahu in October.

NAADAC, which represents the professional interests of more than 75,000 addiction counselors, educators and other addiction-focused health care professionals in the United States, Canada and abroad, will join with the Coalition for a Drug-Free Hawaii, the State of Hawaii Department of Health Alcohol and Drug Abuse Division, the National Asian Pacific American Families Against Substance Abuse (NAPAFASA) and the Hawaii Association of Addiction and Drug Abuse Counselors for two sessions of the conference Balancing the Entanglement: Pain, Co-Occurring Disorders and Prescription Drugs.

The sessions, held on Maui on October 11 and 12 and on Oahu on October 15 and 16, will address pain, co-occurring disorders and prescription drug abuse through the medical model, bio/psycho/social counseling and Hawaiian traditional healing. Each day will provide the opportunity to earn 7 continuing education credits.

Headline speakers include Thomas Freese, PhD, discussing Medication Assisted Treatment; Darryl Inaba, PharmD, CADC III, presenting on Uppers, Downers, All Arounders; Gerald McKenna, MD, introducing the topic Ke Ala Pono The Right Path to Recovery; Cynthia Moreno Tuohy, NCAC II, CCDC III, SAP presenting on Conflict Resolution & Recovery; Mel Pohl, MD, FASM, speaking on Chronic Pain and Addiction: A Challenging Co-occurring Disorder; Bob Richards, MA, NCAC II, CADC III, delivering a presentation on Cultural Issues in Addiction; and Ann Yabusaki, PhD, MFT, relating Cultural Perspectives in Family Therapy with Substance Abusing Youth.
