An internationally known researcher. A pioneer in clinical supervision. Two authors. A physician twice voted to the best doctors in America list. An innovator whose practices have been adopted by the University of Texas. What do they all have in common? They are all headliners at the NAADAC national conference, called Leading the Way, being held from August 11 to 15, 2012, in Indianapolis, Ind.

Who else is presenting at Leading the Way?  

The speakers at the NAADAC Leading the Way conference have helped shape the profession by contributing to the cutting edge of research and clinical practices. Between the six speakers, they have authored over three hundred books and articles.

Below is an outline of their background and experience and when they'll be speaking at Leading the Way:

Carlo DiClementeCarlo DiClemente, PhD. (speaking on August 12, 2012) A Professor and Chair of the  Department of Psychology at the  University of Maryland, Baltimore County. Dr. DiClemente is internationally recognized as co-creator (with James Prochaska, PhD) of the Transtheoretical Model of Change, a model that identifies stages of change and other factors that predict treatment outcomes and allows many more people to enter treatment programs at earlier stages of readiness. DiClemente is the author of more than 140 publications and currently has a book in press, Addiction and Change: How Addictions Develop and Addicted People Recover. Dr. DiClemente has been principal or co-investigator on 25 grant-funded research projects including four current projects, which are funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, the National Cancer Institute, the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism and the National Institute of Child Health Development.

C.C. NuckolsC.C. Nuckols, PhD. (speaking on August 12, 2012) An internationally recognized expert in such areas as behavioral medicine and addictions treatment, Cardwell C. Nuckols has been a clinical and developmental consultant for over thirty years. In 1979, he formed his first company, Cardwell C. Nuckols and Associates LLC, a national and international training and consulting organization. Over the years, he has served the healthcare field in multiple capacities as a clinician, supervisor, program director and hospital administrator. Dr. Nuckols has led numerous corporate start-up and reengineering projects including involvement in the development of three publicly traded companies. His passion and mission is to assist in the translation of emerging scientific research into information and techniques helpful to those who do the important work of helping alcoholics, addicts and those suffering from co-occurring disorders find their personal road to recovery.

Mel Pohl, MDMel Pohl, MD, FASAM. (speaking on August 13, 2012) A Board Certified Family Practitioner, Dr. Pohl serves as the Medical Director of Las Vegas Recovery Center (LVRC) and was a major force in developing the Chronic Pain Recovery Program at LVRC. He is a nationally known public speaker and co-author of Pain Recovery: How to Find Balance and Reduce Suffering from Chronic Pain (Central Recovery Press, 2009); Pain Recovery for Families: How to Find Balance When Someone Else’s Chronic Pain Becomes Your Problem Too (Central Recovery Press, 2010); The Caregiver’s Journey: When You Love Someone with AIDS (Hazelden, 1990); Staying Sane: When You Care for Someone with Chronic Illness (Health Communications, 1992). Dr. Pohl is the author of A Day without Pain (Central Recovery Press, 2008, revised 2011), which won a silver medal from Independent Publisher Book Award in May 2009. He was elected by his peers for inclusion in Best Doctors in America from 2009 to 2010 and 2010 to 2011. He is certified by the American Board of Addiction Medicine (ABAM) and is a Fellow of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM).  Dr. Pohl is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Nevada School of Medicine.

Harold Urschel, MDHarold Urschel, III, MD. (speaking on August 13, 2012) Dr. Urschel is the founder / CEO of the Urschel Recovery Science Institute and also serves as the Chief Medical Strategist and Co-founder of EnterHealth, an addiction disease management company based in Dallas. The primary goal of both Dr. Urschel’s Recovery Science Institute and EnterHealth is to combine the best behavioral treatment methods with the latest scientifically proven medications to maximize his patients’ chances of a successful recovery from the life threatening, chronic medical disease of addiction. Since 1998, Dr. Urschel has been implementing the Recovery Science program at two hospitals and one world class addiction treatment residential facility, Enterhealth’s Life Recovery Center in North Texas. Because of Dr. Urschel’s success in bringing the latest scientific breakthroughs in addiction treatment research into his clinical treatment programs, his Recovery Science addiction treatment program has been utilized as the clinical addiction treatment program for the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, Department of Psychiatry.

Rokelle LernerRokelle Lerner. (speaking on August 14, 2012) A psychotherapist and international lecturer and trainer, she is one of the most sought after speakers and trainers on relationships, family issues and addiction and serves as the clinical director of InnerPath Workshops for Cottonwood de Tucson in Tucson, Ariz. She has inspired audiences throughout the world with her expertise and her ability to address difficult topics with insight, humor and astounding clarity. Lerner has published best-selling books that have been translated into ten languages: The Object of My Affection is in My Reflection: Coping with Narcissists; Living in the Comfort Zone: The Gift of Boundaries in Relationships; Daily Affirmations for Adult Children of Alcoholics; Affirmations for the Inner Child; and Building Relationships that Last. She has received numerous awards for her work with children and families including Esquire magazine's Top 100 Women in the U.S. Who Are Changing the Nation. Lerner has appeared as a guest consultant on many television shows such as Oprah, Good Morning America, CBS Morning News and 20/20.

David PowellDavid Powell, PhD. (speaking on August 15, 2012) An Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Yale University School of Medicine and Senior Advisor, Yale Dept of Psychiatry. He has been in the counseling field since 1965, and has published over 150 articles and ten books in the behavioral health field. Dr. Powell is a licensed marriage and family therapist, licensed alcohol and drug abuse counselor, and certified sex therapy. He received his training in sex therapy at the Masters and Johnson Institute. He has been a Diplomate in the International Academy of Behavioral Medicine, serves on four editorial boards, and has been on advisory boards at Harvard Medical School and Johns Hopkins University. He currently services on the Clinical Advisory Board at CRC Health Group. His books on clinical supervision are considered the primary texts in the field. He was chair of TIP 52 of SAMHSA on clinical supervision. Constantly in demand, he has trained in 87 countries and all 50 US states.
