703/741-7686, ext. 116 The NAADAC Northeast Regional Training Day on Co-occurring Disorders will take place April 3 at the Holiday Inn in Ronkonkoma, N.Y., on Long Island.
The training day coincides with the annual meeting of NAADAC's New York affiliate, the Association for Addiction Professionals of New York (AAPNY), April 4-5.
NAADAC, The Association for Addiction Professionals, is the largest national organization for addiction-focused health care professionals with 13,000 members, including more than 500 in New York.
The training day features two workshops on co-occurring disorders and one on linking research and clinical practice. Individuals with co-occurring disorders experience substance abuse and mental health disorders simultaneously. Historically, they have received inadequate care due to the complexity of their illnesses and the lack of an integrated health care system.
"NAADAC is proud to bring this national-level training day to the regional level," NAADAC President Roger A. Curtiss said. "Given the financial and logistical difficulties of attending national conferences for many people, this is a great way to keep addiction counselors abreast of developments in the profession and provide them with the continuing education they need."
Kathyleen Tomlin, a specialist in the treatment of adolescents and adults with co-occurring disorders, is the featured speaker for the training day, which is sponsored by the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. William Cope Moyers, vice president of external affairs for the Hazelden Foundation, is the keynote speaker at the day's luncheon.
The AAPNY conference includes 10 workshops, including unique presentations on the use
of music and acupuncture in addiction treatment and recovery. Former CNN anchor and host
of "Talk Back Live" Susan Rook will deliver a keynote address on the stigma and discrimination faced by individuals with substance use disorders.
NAADAC's Northeast Region includes Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island, and Vermont. |
