"Paul Wellstone was a great champion of treatment for alcohol, drug and mental health disorders. He worked tirelessly to provide equality and dignity for people struggling for recovery.

"Our profession and our patients have lost a true friend. Sen. Wellstone was a fighter for healthcare for all Americans. Our nation has lost a passionate voice for justice.

"On behalf of the 13,000 members of NAADAC, I extend condolences to the Wellstone family, the other families affected by this tragedy, and the people of Minnesota."

Note: Sen. Paul Wellstone, D-Minn., was named NAADAC Legislator of the Year in 1998.
