NAADAC, The Association for Addiction Professionals is teaming with the Global Health Council, the government of the District of Columbia and other groups for the annual International AIDS Candlelight Memorial on May 21st, 2006. The memorial, held to honor those who have been affected by the AIDS pandemic and to promote HIV/AIDS awareness, will take place in 93 countries worldwide.

Across the nation and around the world, over 4,500 communities will come together with private organizations, faith-based groups, foundations, governments, universities and clinics to encourage others to take action. The memorial will also celebrate the hard and enduring work of addiction professionals who are on the front lines, treating substance abuse and stemming the disease's transmission.

NAADAC recognizes that data clearly show that effective substance abuse prevention, intervention, and treatment can curtail the spread of HIV and improve the situation for those living with HIV/AIDS. Through its worldwide education and certification programs, as well as advocacy and engagement with key stakeholders and coalitions, NAADAC is proud to take a leadership role in enhancing initiatives that address both HIV/AIDS and certification.

The May 21st memorial is much more than a candlelight vigil: it's an occasion to come together, educate and advocate for issues related to HIV/AIDS.
